    Strangulated Intestinal Obstruction Secondary to a Typical Obturator Hernia: A Case Report with Literature Review

    Obturator hernia is a rare pelvic hernia with incidence of 1%. It's a significant cause of intestinal obstruction in emaciated elderly women. Delayed diagnosis and surgical intervention contributed to its relatively high morbidity and mortality. We present a typical case of obturator hernia with positive Howship-Romberg sign and Hannington-Kiff sign. The diagnosis was confirmed by spiral CT preoperatively. During the emergency laparotomy, the incarcerated intestine was reduced and removed. Obturator foramen was repaired by simple suture. The patient recovered uneventfully and no recurrence occurred during the follow-up. The obturator hernia should be included in the differential diagnosis if clinically suspected. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment are essential to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with obturator hernia

    Entropy-Based Maximally Stable Extremal Regions for Robust Feature Detection

    Maximally stable extremal regions (MSER) is a state-of-the-art method in local feature detection. However, this method is sensitive to blurring because, in blurred images, the intensity values in region boundary will vary more slowly, and this will undermine the stability criterion that the MSER relies on. In this paper, we propose a method to improve MSER, making it more robust to image blurring. To find back the regions missed by MSER in the blurred image, we utilize the fact that the entropy of probability distribution function of intensity values increases rapidly when the local region expands across the boundary, while the entropy in the central part remains small. We use the entropy averaged by the regional area as a measure to reestimate regions missed by MSER. Experiments show that, when dealing with blurred images, the proposed method has better performance than the original MSER, with little extra computational effort

    A Search for Spectral Galaxy Pairs of Overlapping Galaxies based on Fuzzy Recognition

    The Spectral Galaxy Pairs (SGPs) are defined as the composite galaxy spectra which contain two independent redshift systems. These spectra are useful for studying dust properties of the foreground galaxies. In this paper, a total of 165 spectra of SGPs are mined out from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 9 (DR9) using the concept of membership degree from the fuzzy set theory particularly defined to be suitable for fuzzily identifying emission lines. The spectra and images of this sample are classified according to the membership degree and their image features, respectively. Many of these 2nd redshift systems are too small or too dim to select from the SDSS images alone, making the sample a potentially unique source of information on dust effects in low-luminosity or low-surface-brightness galaxies that are underrepresented in morphological pair samples. The dust extinction of the objects with high membership degree is also estimated by Balmer decrement. Additionally, analyses for a series of spectroscopic observations of one SGP from 165 systems indicate that a newly star-forming region of our Milky Way might occur.Comment: 16pages, 6figure

    Hidden-Markov-Models-Based Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition

    This paper is concerned with the recognition of dynamic hand gestures. A method based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) is presented for dynamic gesture trajectory modeling and recognition. Adaboost algorithm is used to detect the user's hand and a contour-based hand tracker is formed combining condensation and partitioned sampling. Cubic B-spline is adopted to approximately fit the trajectory points into a curve. Invariant curve moments as global features and orientation as local features are computed to represent the trajectory of hand gesture. The proposed method can achieve automatic hand gesture online recognition and can successfully reject atypical gestures. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reach better recognition results than the traditional hand recognition method

    Frequent copy number variations of PI3K/AKT pathway and aberrant protein expressions of PI3K subunits are associated with inferior survival in diffuse large B cell lymphoma

    BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway is activated in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), PI3K constitutive activation plays a crucial role in PI3K/AKT pathway. However, the copy number variations (CNVs) of PI3K subunits on gene level remain unknown in DLBCL. Therefore, the aim of the study is to investigate the CNV of PI3K subunits and their relationship with clinicopathological features exploring the possible mechanism underlying of PI3K activation in DLBCL. METHODS: CNV of 12 genes in the PI3K/AKT pathway was detected by NanoString nCounter in 60 de novo DLBCLs and 10 reactive hyperplasia specimens as controls. Meanwhile, immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to examine the expression of p110α, p110β, p110γ, p110δ, and pAKT on DLBCL tissue microarrays. RESULTS: All PI3K and AKT subunits, except for PIK3R1, had various CNVs in the form of copy number amplifications and copy number losses. Their rates were in the range of 8.3–20.0%. Of them PIK3CA and PIK3CB gene CNVs were significantly associated with decreased overall survival (P = 0.029 and P = 0.019, respectively). IHC showed that the frequency of strong positive expression of p110α, p110β, p110γ, and p110δ were 26.7%, 25.0%, 18.3%, and 25.0% respectively, and they were found to be associated with decreased survival (P = 0.022, P = 0.015, P = 0.015, and P = 0.008, respectively). Expression of p110α was not only significantly associated with CNVs of PIK3CA (P = 0.002) but also positively correlated with strong positive expression of pAKT (P = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS: CNV of PIK3CA is highly associated with aberrant p110α protein expression and subsequent activation of PI3K/AKT pathway. CNVs of PIK3CA and PIK3CB, and aberrant protein expression of p110 isoforms are of great important value for predicting inferior prognosis in DLBCL. Frequent CNVs of PI3K/AKT subunits may play an important role in the tumorigenesis of DLBCL

    MicroRNA 27b-3p Modulates SYK in Pediatric Asthma Induced by Dust Mites

    The PI3K-AKT pathway is known to regulate cytokines in dust mite-induced pediatric asthma. However, the underlying molecular steps involved are not clear. In order to clarify further the molecular steps, this study investigated the expression of certain genes and the involvement of miRNAs in the PI3K-AKT pathway, which might affect the resultant cytokine-secretion. in-vivo and in-vitro ELISA, qRT-PCR and microarrays analyses were used in this study. A down-expression of miRNA-27b-3p in dust mite induced asthma group (group D) was found by microarray analysis. This was confirmed by qRT-PCR that found the miRNA-27b-3p transcripts that regulated the expression of SYK and EGFR were also significantly decreased (p < 0.01) in group D. The transcript levels of the SYK and PI3K genes were higher, while those of EGFR were lower in the former group. Meanwhile, we found significant differences in plasma concentrations of some cytokines between the dust mite-induced asthma subjects and the healthy controls. On the other hand, this correlated with the finding that the transcripts of SYK and its downstream PI3K were decreased in HBE transfected with miRNA-27b-3p, but were increased in HBE transfected with the inhibitor in vitro. Our results indicate that the differential expression of the miRNAs in dust mite-induced pediatric asthma may regulate their target gene SYK and may have an impact on the PI3K-AKT pathway associated with the production of cytokines. These findings should add new insight into the pathogenesis of pediatric asthma
